Does the Radon Report Describe the Basement You Plan to Use?

Finding a radon report in the house file is useful, but its presence does not answer every question about a planned basement conversion. Read what space and period it describes before carrying its conclusion into a different room or a changed building arrangement.

Locate the actual test information

Keep the complete result rather than a cropped number in a message. Identify the test location, start and end dates, device or method, and any stated qualification. Vermont Health explains that radon is odorless and testing is necessary. A lack of basement smell therefore cannot fill a gap in the report or establish that another level has the same conditions.

Describe what has changed

List the proposed use of the basement and material changes since testing, such as building work or mechanical-system changes. These are questions for the testing or mitigation professional, not reasons to adjust the reported number yourself. State an uncertain device location as uncertain. A good record preserves the original result while making the mismatch visible to someone qualified to interpret it.

Keep concrete work within its own scope

Ask whether the testing specialist recommends additional testing and when it should occur relative to planned work. Separately ask the concrete provider about the agreed repair or assessment scope. Neither a repair invoice nor a newly sealed-looking floor proves radon reduction. Retain the specialist’s advice with the project sequence so finishing work does not quietly turn an old report into a current whole-building assurance.

Worked example

Illustrative example: a fictional household finds a test taken upstairs before a basement remodel. They send the full report and planned use to a radon professional. The concrete inquiry proceeds on its own terms, while the testing question remains assigned rather than assumed resolved.
